Afrobeats star Davido says he will donate 250 million Nigerian naira ($ 608,000; £ 450,000) to orphanages in Nigeria after fans send him some money.

Earlier this week, the musician asked fans who believe “I gave you a hit song” to send money to a bank account he listed under his name.

Davido said on Saturday that the roll call was done in a “playful way”, but it exceeded his expectations.

He thanked those who had donated money, as he announced how it would be used.

The amount given to orphanages includes donations from fans and a personal contribution of N50m.

Davido is considered one of the biggest stars of African music. He has won MTV and BET music awards and has collaborated with international artists including Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj.

Her request on social media this week was met with a mixed reception. Some have pointed out that the star, who has around 22 million followers on Instagram, often displays her lavish lifestyle online.

In a Twitter post with laughing emojis, Davido said his goal was to raise money to clear his Rolls-Royce car from a port.

He then shared the bank account details and screenshots as the contained amount continued to grow for a couple of days.

In his Saturday statement, the singer said his goal was to do this fundraiser for his birthday every year as a way to give back.

“I’ve always been passionate about giving back and helping people,” he said.
