Coronation Street dominated the Inside Soap Awards with a total of seven wins, including the top prize for best soap.
David Neilson of the ITV series, who plays Roy Cropper, won Best Actor while Sally Carman, who plays Abi Franklin, was named Best Actress.
The show also won the Best Plot award for the hate crime storyline involving characters Seb and Nina.
Inside Soap editor Gary Gillatt said, “It’s the kind of intimate story – which brings us close to an all-too-real tragedy – that packs a punch.”
The story shows Seb and Nina being attacked due to Nina’s alternate identity and the ripple effect this has on their family and community.
Judges praised the show, which worked closely with the Sophie Lancaster Foundation on the storyline, for addressing difficult topics.
Best Newcomer was awarded to Jude Riordan, who plays Sam Blakeman, and Dame Maureen Lipman was honored for Funniest Performance.
Sally Carman won Best Actress for playing Abi Franklin
She said, “It’s wonderful to be fun in this day and age – and I’m as happy as I’m 19.
“Turning 75 and being named best newcomer in 2019 and now the funniest person on soap – that’s really, really cool.”
In addition to being named Best Actor, Neilson was recognized in the Best Partnerships category for his on-screen interactions with Mollie Gallagher, played by Nina Lucas.
She said, “It’s lovely for me and Mollie that extravagant characters like Roy and Nina draw audiences so much.
“They may be seen as eccentric, but they are appreciated and loved – and that’s wonderful.”
