Chappelle denounces the cancellation of culture amid Netflix’s transgender rage

US comedian Dave Chappelle, whose latest Netflix special sparked a transsexual backlash, has responded to those who, according to him, want to “cancel” him.

Chappelle posted on Instagram that he was willing to meet with members of the transgender community, amid criticism that his comedy show was transphobic.

He also invited viewers to decide if he was “canceled”.

It comes after a small protest last week outside Netflix’s Los Angeles headquarters.

Critics have taken offense at Chappelle’s Netflix special, The Closer, in which he claims that “gender is a fact” and that LGBT people are “too sensitive”.

Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, apologized for how he handled internal employee dissent, saying, “I was wrong.”

Chappelle’s video, posted on her Instagram account Monday, was shot during her performance in Louisville, Kentucky on Sunday, according to CNN. It was her first public reaction to criticism since her special premiered on October 5th. He appeared on the show alongside popular podcaster Joe Rogan.

“It was said in the press that I was invited to speak with Netflix transgender employees and I declined,” Chappelle, 48, told the audience.

“That’s not true. If they had invited me I would have accepted. Although I’m confused about what we’re talking about … You said you want a safe working environment at Netflix. Well, it seems like I’m the only one who can’t no longer go to the office “.

“For the transgender community, I’m more than willing to give you an audience,” he continued. “But you won’t call me. I don’t bow to anyone’s requests.”

He also denied being in conflict with the LGBT community, saying “this has nothing to do with them. It’s about corporate interests and what I can say and what I can’t say.”

Last week Netflix had a record number of subscribers of 213.5 million globally.

Chappelle also said the special resulted in him not being invited to show his latest documentary, Untitled, at film festivals.

“Today, not a film company, not a film studio, not a film festival … will touch this film,” he said, inviting people to see his new film and decide “am I canceled or not?”
