Hollywood star Chris Evans takes Buzz Lightyear to infinity in the first trailer for Pixar’s Toy Story spin-off.
The animated film, titled Lightyear, will focus on the backstory of the space ranger who allegedly inspired the toy in the Toy Story franchise.
Lightyear sees Evans take on the voice acting duties of Tim Allen, who played the toy character in the four original films.
Directed by Angus MacLane, the release is scheduled for June 2022.
“It’s a simple sci-fi action movie about Buzz Lightyear’s character”, MacLane told EW.
The new film will explore Buzz’s rise through the ranks to become captain of the Universe Protection Unit of the Space Ranger Corps, dedicated to the fight against the evil Emperor Zurg.
The trailer, featuring the soundtrack of David Bowie’s Starman, shows him flying his spaceship across the galaxy and battling enemies before donning the suit popularized by his toy counterpart.
The clip ends before Buzz can finish his catchphrase: “To infinity and beyond”.
The first 1995 Toy Story film saw Buzz mistakenly believe that he is a real-life space ranger rather than a commodity, and unsurprisingly he has trouble flying in his integrated spacesuit.
Prior to the fourth Toy Story movie of 2019, Disney revealed that its Buzz figure is its best-selling toy of all time.
