A hacker named Gary Bowser – who shares his last name with the fictional, turtle-like villain in various Nintendo games – has agreed to pay a $ 10 million (£ 7.5) fine for the piracy charges.

The deal is the latest development in a civil lawsuit filed against Bowser by Nintendo in the United States.

The hacker also pleaded guilty in a federal case against him in late October.

He was already required to pay $ 4.5 million and faces up to 10 years in prison.

Bowser, a member of the Team Xecutor piracy group, admitted in the federal case that he “knowingly and voluntarily participated in a cybercriminal enterprise that hacked major game consoles.”

These included Nintendo Switch and 3DS.

Bowser also agreed to have made and sold software that allowed people to circumvent the protections built into game consoles, so that they could be used to play pirated versions of video games.

The hacker, originally from Canada, was arrested in the Dominican Republic and deported to the United States in September 2020.
